Soquel Vineyards has been a beehive of activity during the last several months. Paul, Jon and I finished the 2006 harvest in November. During this time our schedules were determined not by the tick of the clock but by when the ripened fruit was pressed and crushed. We experimented with 30 different types of yeast, dry ice and several lengths of maceration. These wines to come will be outstanding, particularly the Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Futures Program
Zinfandel – 106 year-old-vine
Our Zinfandel from the Ken Schmirer's venerable 106 year-old-vine vineyard with its unsurpassable quality will be one of the three distinct wines in this year's Futures Program. This long-standing vineyard, planted by Mr. Schmirer's grandfather produced less than one ton of fruit per acre yielding only twelve barrels of wine. Jon and Paul partnered in the production and style of this prized wine.

Pinot Noirs - Lester and Muns Family Vineyards
Likewise, our Pinot Noirs from the Lester and Muns family vineyards will be included in the Futures Program. Of the 32 barrels produced from the Lester vineyard, only seven, because of their particular clone, made it into our rigorous Partners' Reserve Program.

Muns Vineyard
The Muns vineyard, located at 2,600 foot elevation on East Loma Prieta in the Santa Cruz Mountains, has three clones in its blend. This wine is my personal favorite from the 2006 vintage. It is dense and rich, carries many earth flavors and is packed with aromas of pomegranate, plums and cherries. This could be our best Pinot Noir in 19 years.

Our old-vine Zinfandel and these two Pinot Noirs are aging in Artisan French oak barrels.

Wine Club
Preparing to Bottle…
We are preparing to bottle two Zinfandels, six barrels of new Allier and Vosges from France, and six of new Southern Missouri American cooperage. The lots will be bottled separately, each indicating either French or American oak. Offered exclusively to our Wine Club Members ($30.00 per bottle and 10% case discount), neither Zinfandel will be sold at restaurants or shops. Paul, Jon and I encourage you to barrel sample these incredible Zinfandels any weekend of your choice with us at Soquel Vineyards.

January Wine Club Shipment
In the Virgilian spirit, we enclose in this month's shipment our ancient 105 year-old vine Zinfandel. This 2005 vintage wine is elegant and stylish exhibiting layers of ripe fruit flavors and carries a long, creamy sweet oak finish (almost back to Roman antiquity). Only 450 cases were produced, and we offer our Oldest and finest exclusively to you in the Newest Year.

A very joyous and peaceful New Year to you!

In appreciation of your continued interest and support,

Peter Bargetto
